MARTIN LUTHER KING ASSEMBLY

image

The Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly

Every year Mr.Rochelle Coleman comes to Edgemont to tell a story about different African-Americans. This year it was about someone named Martin Luther King Jr. In the beginning of the story, little Martin goes over to his friend's house to play baseball. When he gets to the house, their mom says that they can't play with Martin, because of the color of his skin. Martin was so upset and started to cry . Then he asked his mom why he could not play with white kids. His mom told him about segregation, slavery, and prejudice.
The next story was about a woman named Rev. Abernathy. Abernathy was on a bus and sat next to 4 other African-Americans on the bus. When a white man boarded the bus, the bus driver told all five of them to go to the back of the bus. Everybody moved to the back except for Abernathy. Just like Rosa Parks, Rev. Abernathy got arrested and fined.

                                                               Michael and Karyn's Favorite Part
My favorite part was when Martin Luther King Jr. and his attorney had a pillow fight. This is my favorite part, because Martin was chasing his attorney around the hotel room. My least favorite part of this scene was when Martin was shot and killed.

Veteran's Day Performance

On November 11th Ms. Waller's fourth grade class did an outstanding job with their performance of the song The Wind Beneath My Wings, in sign language. There was a memorial service and the mayor, Jerry Fried attended. It took place in Edgemont Park at 11 am. The class was wearing black and signing as the song played. There was speech, a prayer, a solo, trumpet playing and a salute. Three soldiers marched and shot blanks into the air. Ms. Waller's class also wore white gloves and peace was the theme of the day.

Books Come to Life

THE MYSTERY OF THE MYSTERY MEAT
Ms. Waller s class had a mystery dinner on Halloween.  We had a mystery to see who stole the plastic spiders from the classroom window.  The parents had to guess who stole them.  While they were eating they had to see if they saw the criminal.  The person who guessed correctly won a prize.  They also had to guess what was in the Mystery Meat.

CRISPIN by Avi

image

In the book Crispin, a thirteen year old boy named Crispin is a poor boy in the 14 century whose mom just died. Crispin runs away from his village, Stromford, because of the way his village?s steward John Aycliffe treats his family. The night he leaves, Crispin goes to an old woman?s home and is supposed to see his preacher. The preacher was going to tell him crucial information about Crispin?s father who he never met. The preacher never made it to the home. On Crispin?s journey he comes across the dead preacher. The murderer of the preacher was John Aycliffe, who killed the preacher because he didn?t want Crispin to know the crucial information about his father. When Crispin gets to an abandoned town, he meets a juggler named Bear. They go to a town called Great Wexley to hide from John Aycliffe. Will John Aycliffe kill Crispin? Will Crispin find out the secret about his  father? Find out in Crispin the Cross of Lead!

My favorite part of the story is when Crispin infiltrates John Aycliffe?s castle. Crispin goes into the castle and tries to free Bear who was captured by Aycliffe. This is my favorite part, because there is a lot of action between John Aycliffe and Crispin with sword fighting. I also like when Crispin brought Aycliffe to his knees and had him set Bear free.

Avi is an inspirational historical fiction writer. Some of his most famous books are Iron Thunder, Don?t you Know There?s a War Going on?, and Crispin. His books all have one thing in common. They all have a bunch of action from sword fights to gun shots. His books are interesting for anybody aged 9-14.
